Safety check list/General maintenance

Always have your bike routinely maintained by a qualified workshop( Click here for a local list). Services can be carried out by these professionals and can cover gears, brakes, wheel alignment, bearings, suspension (if fitted), cranks, hubs etc. This should be carried out at least once a year, or more often depending on the amount of use, and will ensure your bike is in tip top condition.

The following checks should be carried out before any use:-

Ensure chain/gear-set is lightly oiled

A dry/rusty chain will make an awful squeaking noise, increase wear on the cogs and impede the performance of your bike.

Check/adjust brakes to ensure optimum performance

Only attempt this if you are comfortable in doing so, otherwise seek help from a professional. Most bikes will have an adjuster at the brake lever end.

Ensure gears are shifting properly

In the cycling world there is nothing more annoying than climbing a hill and finding your bike keeps slipping out of gear. If adjustments are required it is advisable to leave this to the professionals.

Ensure batteries/lights are fully operational

Don’t be caught out at night with failing lights. Consider carrying spare batteries.

Always ensure handlebars/seat post are fully tightened and at the correct height/position

Seat height – The correct height is set by sitting on the saddle with your leg fully extended and your heel placed on the peddle, with the peddle at the lowest point. Therefore, when cycling, with the ball of your foot on the peddle, your knee will be slightly bent when the peddle is at its lowest point. Handlebar position – this should be set to allow easy reach of the gears and brakes, and will be comfortable for you.

The above two points are recommendations only. If this feels uncomfortable, then it is probably not right for you, make necessary adjustments, and come up with a setting that you are happy with.

Wheels

Ensure all spokes are fully tightened - loose spokes are more likely to snap. If this happens, your wheel will then be out of alignment, and may rub on brakes and/or framework.

Tyres

Check/adjust tyre pressures - ensure your tyre pressures are set at the recommended pressure for your particular tyres (as indicated on tyre wall) for maximum efficiency. If the pressure is too low, more effort will be required to cycle, as more of the tyre is making contact with the surface.  Inspect general tyre condition regularly for cuts and wear.
